I was checking a list of BMDs for one branch of the family, so thought I'd check the local paper for any announcements.
And I found that (presumably because it's the same newspaper group) that
http://familyannouncements.thisiscornwall.co.uk/ThisIsClassifieds/www/default.aspx?p24=Bmds&p25=Bmds&p28=THISISCORNWALL
allows you to search for family announcements from all sorts of areas.
There's a drop-down list of areas, as well as classifications to choose from. I changed the search dates to begin 1st Jan 1997, but only got hits from about 2002 onwards.
Depends how common your surname is, or which area(s) you want, but worth trying.

Well found, and thank you, that's a really good site. I see you can even request an email anniversary reminder.

This is a good site! I got some possible leads to check out also. I looked for a Devon site but the only 1 was current announcements only. No archives. Good Work!

The thisiscornwall website is the website for, among other papers, The Western Morning News which covers Plymouth & South Devon & possibly other areas of Devon too. I've certainly seen death notices for the Tiverton area in the past.

It's well worth checking out the wedding anniversaries section. My great aunts have all died but one had celebrated her wedding anniversary before her death. I knew where she married, who she married & which year. The announcement in the WMN filled in the date & saved me the cost of a certificate.
