Hi, I subscribed to BG a couple of days ago but did not really introduce myself. My name is Ann I live in sunny Queensland in Australia. Been here many years, I am now retired after working the last 20 years with the police department.

As my previous message show's I am researching my family from Billinge Higher End, Nr St Helens, Lancs.

Next summer I will be back in the old country and I need to know where I can find the church records of St Mary's RC church in Birchley, Billinge, where all my family where christened and married etc., and also I need to look up records from Holy Cross RC Church, St Helens too.

I did contact these two churches by email on more than one occasion but sadly no replies came back. Because I will not be in the area for very long I need to know exactly where to to go for both church records and if anyone can help me with information re addresses and telephone numbers or email addresses of people to contact to make prior appointments before I leave for my trip I would be very gratefull.

Thankyou, I eagerly await your reply's.

Ann

Hi Ann,
Billinge Higher End is in Billinge, Wigan.
St Helen's is a good few miles away, they have rival rugby teams!

The Wigan History Shop will be able to help you
http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/familyhistory/
and this on Genuki will give you a lot of info.

Hi Suzzi

Thanks for your links, I will have a look at these. I was only 19 when I left St Helens to emigrate to OZ but we are a family who went to Knowlsey Rd every week to watch Saints. When I returned to the UK in 1967 we very often went to the games. We left UK in1982 to return to Oz. Our team here is Melbourne Storm because we lived In Victoria for 20 years before moving here to Queensland 5 years ago. They won the cup final yesterday. they have only been going 9 years they have won the premiership twice in that time but been in the final 4 times. They did us prowd, it was a great game, they only lost 3 games all season they really eserved it. thank's again. Ann

I am trying to trace the family tree of William Jemson Ledger , who was born in 1827.all I really know about him prior to coming to Australia in 1849, was that he was married at Sevenoaks , Kent, to Mary Ann Wright, in April 1849.
He may have been known as "ledger" rather than Jemson Ledger, and some of the family are known only as "Jemson" Other places which are briefly mentioned are , Mereworth, and Halstead. I have come to a dead end in Kent, as neither of his parents are mentioned on his marriage certificate, and rumour has it that he was orphaned, and brought up by other family members. other names mentioned in some of my research are, Sarah Longhurst and William Jameson(jemson) married in 1800 at Mereworth, their son William ,christened at Halstead in 1805, Dinah Jemson, their daughter, christened at Halstead in 1808, their daughter, Sarah, christened at Halstead in 1812, and Mary Ledger ,married Richard Lewington at Halstead in 1830 .(rumour has it that he was a Captain in Wellington's Army
Any information would be great . Barb Jamieson , G G Grandaughter of William and Mary
