Hi,
Could someone please check the 1901 census for Robert J. Tarlton b.1889 in Ashbourne? He doesn't appear with the rest of the family (head Robert Tarlton b. 1854 Ashbourne, living at Mayfield Rd. Ashbourne). I'd like to know where he was.

It's the only one I can see as well. And there's only one candidate in FreeBMD answering that description.
Do you actually have Robert J Tarlton's marriage and birth certificate? Can you please confirm from those who his parents were?
Robert the Tailor appears to have a new wife in 1901 (See 1895 Dec Ashborne 7b 1231).

Hello,
I also found the Thomas Tarlton coach painter and I still haven't ruled him out. But on the 1891 census I've got Robert Tarlton age 37, a tailor and his wife Hannah age 34 both born in Ashbourne. There are other children as well; Harriet A. age 11, Albert age 7, Thomas age 4, Robert J. age 2 and Frank 1 month. The address is Compton Terrace, Ashbourne, although in 1881 it is 'terrace Compton St. Sturton.'
One reason why I think this is the more likely family is that they later move to Mayfield Rd and my grandmother (daughter of Robert J.) remembers visiting Robert's parents at their house on Mayfield Rd.
I'm certain there's a connection somewhere. Robert (father of Robert J.) has siblings born in Leek and his grandmother, Elizabeth was born in Wigginton.
I'm sure it'll all make sense eventually.

I think Sue and I can both see the census entries you mention but when you say "I still haven't ruled him out" what exactly do you mean? Ruled him out from what? Being Robert J's father? Being Robert the Tailor's brother?
Perhaps if you told us what you're trying to achieve we might be able to suggest something. If Robert J is an ancestor you need his marriage certificate and his birth certificate.

I would always take a census entry with a pince of salt. Just because a child is listed as being the son of a couple doesn't necessarily make it so. Enumerators didn't always do their job as diligently as they should.
The only way to be sure who his parents were is to buy the certificates. It may well be the same child but on one or other census night he was staying with relatives & wrongly listed as being the son.

Hi,
Sorry to confuse everyone. Really I was just curious as to where Robert J. might be. Also, just to clarify with Thomas, I was just trying to see if they were part of the same family. I think I shall have to get a copy of Robert J. and Gertrude's marriage certificate to be sure of his parentage.
Thanks for all the help.
