Hi

Does anyone know about National Registration Day? Have the records been keeped and if so, are they available to be looked at or when they will be?

I just came across a reference to it in 'Mr Brown's War' - A Diary of the Second World War.

1st January 2040, but they do not contain details of service personnel. It was a "census" conducted for the issue of id cards and used the system created for the 1941 census which did not take place due to other preoccupations.

Smug ;)

I don't have to. I have my own National Registration Card still !!

One of the interesting things about this card, is that it shows every address where I lived, and the dates of every change of address. (It wasn't just a one-off registration, it had to be updated every time one moved house).

Hmmm... I'm starting to feel old
Better change the subject.

Rod Hmmm... I've lost my card, I'd forgotten about registering change of address. I wonder when this stopped ... did it continue after 1945?

I see the National Registration Act was dated 1915. Was it current in the first world war? When did National Registration start?

They were valid, and had to be updated, right into the 1950s.

It ended in 1952 according to Lords Hansard, which also has an interesting reply about how the National Registration numbers were used as the first National Health numbers as well... read more here...
