I'm not sure how many other people out there use Picasa to store and enhance photos and documents but I've found the following very useful.
Sometimes the census documents on-line are very faint, particularly 1841. I've just realised that once you've saved the image with Picasa you can use the "shadows" option in TUNING more than once (just click back on one of the other tabs and then go back to TUNING)
The "shadows" basically makes the black bits blacker and broader on documents and can help to make very faint writing legible to you so that you dont have to rely on the transcription thats provided.
There are probably easier ways of doing that out there but Picasa works for me!
