If it were in Victoria, there would be a police report in the Inquest documents - but I know nothing about Queensland, but expect something the same.

It's been awhile but if you're still looking you may be interested in the following information. :)
Name: WILLIAMS, Charles
Occupation: Miner
Age: 56
Height: 6ft 1"
Identification: body not found
Date of Death: 18 Jan 1887
Place of Death: Burdekin River
Police District: Ravenswood
Cause of Death: Drowning
Person last seen in company with deceased: Charles Alford
By Whom Reported: J. Ellis, J.P.
Inquest: Held in QLD
(Source: 'Return of Death Reported to the Police Since Publication', Queensland Police Gazette, 1887)
An index is available online at the QLD State Archives website but only up to the year 1886. I would imagine that the Archives have an index of inquest records post 1886 offline.
