Hello all! I read about this forum in this week's "Computer Active" which has a great article giving advice on building family trees, with some very useful links. I am so glad I followed it up. I know I'm going to enjoy it here!

I am particularly interested in the names Roake and Roe in Hampshire, Surrey. and Northamptonshire, particulary Prior to 1840s and after 1911.

Best wishes to everyone!

Help please Bo-peep! I can't find the "surname interests section".
Did I miss that section when I registered?

Hi LynA.
Thanks for your welcome
So you are almost a neighbour then?
I only moved here to Netley Abbey 5 years ago, from Aldershot, so I'm a Newby hereat home too though I have made many friends since moving here. Netley is so friendly and I live only 2 mins from The Solent. I especially like Southampton for the lovely parks and gardens in the City. the
History and sometimes even the shopping!

As Southampton was originally the County town,I thought I might be able to
find some history of my family in the reference library but seems everything is in Winchester now. Never mind,I am really enjoying myself researching here on the internet. So glad I found these Forums.
Best wishes
Jennie.

Hi Kate,

Thank you for your welcome. I'm sure I am going to enjoy my time on here.

Yes, I know Bently! It's a pretty little village near Alton isn't it?
I was born and bred in Basingstoke which isn't too far from there, (or Southamton!)

Bye for now.
Jennie.

Hello Jennie,

Glad you're enjoying yourself in the South. I expect you've found that the Reference Library does have quite a lot of general information about Hampshire and its villages, but it has concentrated on the City and also on Maritime history.

I'm not far away; just outside Bitterne. Apart from a couple of years in Wales for my studies I've spent all my life in Southampton, but I've got ancestors from all over the country.

I hope you enjoy the forums and exchanging information with everyone.

Lynda :)

Thanks for your welcome Tony.

Aaww! Basingstoke! Born and bred there, and still visit often. Still quite fond of my old home town; Left in 1971 because of my husband's job promotion. Wasn't called "Doughnut City" then though!

Happy Hunting and best wishes.

Jennie.

For anyone following this who doesn't know Basingstoke or understand the reference to Doughnut City it has nothing to do with our dietary preferences. It is an affectionate reference to all the roundabouts around the ring road. Originally planned to have underpasses and flyovers with the roundabouts as a temporary expedient, the cash ran out and most of the roundabouts stayed.

Many drivers get lost because placing a large circular piece of earth in the middle of a crossroads confuses them and they can't seem to find the other side...doh! Despite the idiocy of such drivers Basingstoke has an excellent ring road system that is the easiest way to get around the town. Compare our mainly free moving traffic with a place like Reading just up the road.

Here endeth the advertisement:D

Those are a doddle. It's those roundabouts in Hemel Hempstead that really throw the unwary :D
