Hi

Just wondering if someone might be able to give me some idea how to get shipping information from Canada. My great grandfather was in Quebec for sometime between 1880 and 1881. He left Norway on the "Golden Horn". He arrived here in Australia about 1884 so its the period 1880 to 1884 I am looking for him. I have detail of the ship he went to Canada on. I belived that the Golden Horn was berthed in Trois Riviers or 3 Rivers near Quebec.

From some information that I have received fron Norway it is believed that I might be able to find his arrival in Canada in the Newspapers and perhaps his departure. I am happy to do the research I just need to know how I can find the relevant information that I am after.

As he was not naturalised here in Australia where he eventually died, I don't believe that he would have applied to immigrate to Canada either but I could very well be wrong and more than happy to admit that. His name was Johan Marinius Hansen or Meyer, he was born in Moss Norway 29 June 1860. After he arrived in Australia he never left.

I would be very greatful if some one could please tell me how I might be able to find his arrival in Canada and his departure form Canada to either England or Australia.

I forgot I have looked for him on the 1881 census in both Canada and England and nothing, I also tried the 1880 in the USA. One more quiestion if he was in port in 1881 would he have been included in the 1881 census in Canada. Thank you all very much for your time.

Regards

I noticed you posted in October and no one has yet answered your post, so I thought I would make a couple of suggestions.

If you know the ship and dates, you could look here http://www.collectioncanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/001045-130-e.html for the latest searchable database.

As for newspapers, if he was in Québec, the papers you would be looking for are the Québec Mercury, the Québec Morning Chronicle, the Québec Herald, or the Courier du Canada. Earlier pages of these are online at www.paperofrecord.com, but I think for later ones, they are only availabe on microfilm or at archives here in Ottawa or in Québec.
