The aims of Brit-Gen are simple. We want to help you with your family history research, but we also want to meet other like-minded people and have some fun along the way.
It can be very disconcerting to be a 'newbie' to a forum; worried about making a mistake with posting; asking what seems to you to be a trivial question, etc. Let me assure you that it doesn't matter, no one will poke fun at you. What is important is that you join us and participate.
We are a fairly nosey lot here (I don't know a researcher who isn't nosey!) so please let us know which side of the pond you live on. You can do this in your profile on your User CP.
Before doing anything else, familiarise yourself with the forum rules and take a look at the FAQs (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/faq.php). Introduce yourself to everyone here and then post your research names in the Surname Interest section. If you have a family history query, please find the appropriate forum, post your question using 'Post a New Thread' giving as much information as you can; approximate time frame, place, etc. It is very easy, I promise.
It would help a great deal and generate more interest if, in the heading of the thread, you would use capital letters for the surname, for example, DRAKE as opposed to drake. Also, if you are researching an area as opposed to a name, then put the name of the place in capital letters too. It makes finding your query a lot easier, and the quicker we find it, the sooner we can help.
Please be assured that your privacy is of paramount importance to us and if you have decided to keep your email address private, we will never divulge your details to anyone. For that reason, we ask that you do not post your email addresses on the open forum.
Come on, don't just lurk in the background as a guest. Get registered, introduce yourself and come and join in with all the other Brit-Gen family history addicts.
Brit-Gen is interesting, informative and above all else, fun.
