After four years I am still trying to trace the path of my gt.gt grandfather! Joseph Naish was born in Beech Hill Berks. (previously thought as Birch Hill) c.1838 and hope someone can help or give me some suggestions. I cannot trace a birth for Joseph in Berks. and he is not in the 1851 Census for that county (as far as I can ascertain).

I find him on the 1881 Chelsea Mddx.Census living with his (wife)? Ann Vigor who was born in Sussex and baptised in Burwash, and several children including my grandmother. I have him up to 1901 when he is a widower...but I cannot trace a marriage (have looked on 1837online). Joseph had a sister Jane who is found on 1891 living with him and who is unmarried. This brings me to Sussex.....

I found Jane on the 1871 Census for Chelsea Mddx. (where the family later settled and POB shown as Beech Hill Berks.) as a visitor to a family called COOPER? where the wife is shown as born in Burwash Sussex. Now.....possibly Jane was living in Sussex and this is a relative. What I am really asking is does anyone have access to the 1851/1861 Census for Burwash area who could do a look up to see if either Joseph or/and Jane are there. There are several families of Naish on the 1881 shown in Sussex, but I cannot say if they are family at this moment in time. Without a marriage or birth I am unable to trace the parents of Joseph and Jane and am so frustrated. All help gratefully received.

Hi Glenys,

I decided to have a go at your query seeing how strangely listers have avoided it.

I can see why!

There is no trace of a Nash/Naish in Burwash in 1861.

The family in the 1871 where sister Jane is must be the same as the family Joseph is with in 1881. Ann is the right age and birthplace, children the right ages & birthplaces the same, except in 1871 you have James and in 1881 he is Joseph, use of a middle name?

I searched for Joseph Cooper in 1871 and found on RG 10, Piece 10, Folio 100, Joseph COOPER, Servant, Unm, Age 37, Butchers man, birthplace Beech Hill, Berks. (I did wonder if in 1881 his age was 48 but is obscured). He is at 1 Queens Road, Chelsea, St Luke.

I would search again for the marriage using Cooper and see what you find. I expect that Jane Naish the sister had been married & widowed, and was a Cooper.

Why is Joseph not living with his wife; perhaps his employer wanted him to live in, makes you wonder, and as to the use of the Naish name I'll leave that to you or another Lister!

At least you can start again with a birth search, just remember not to believe what you see written until it is verified. Good hunting.

Steve

Thank you Steve for your time.

I really should have updated my message, as my searches on the Chelsea front, turned up something I had missed!! At least you have confirmed things.
I'm ashamed to say that the family of Cooper that I found on the 1871 Chelsea, was actually my Naish. The writing on the CD was really faint and part of the letters were missing so that loops joined the names below. Someone else looked on Ancestry and actually discovered that it was my Ann with children, including my grandmother Blanche, and Jane Naish. This caused even more confusion, as previous children including Joseph (actually James Joseph) were called Naish, and I have copy b.c saying this. I couldn't however find a birth for Blanche. I did a search on 1837 online and found her under Cooper!! I now have the cert confirming this. However, a later child is called Naish again, and when my grandmother married, she gave her name as Naish. I have a strong suspicion that Joseph & Ann had money problems and couldn't pay the rent so moved to other lodgings. Why they chose to call themselves Cooper I don't know. As to why Joseph was living apart and calling himself Cooper also, and showing as unmarried, I am mystified!

Ann was definately born Ann Vigor and lived in Burwash and I have her birth certificate. I found a Naish in Sussex at some stage and wondered if there was any connection, seeing as I cant find Joseph's birth or where he was in 1851. I can't even prove that they were ever married!! Jane I think was shown as single all the way through, so I don't think she was ever married. But I can't even find her birth!!

Oh well, back to the drawing board....and thank you so much for taking the time to have a go at helping, I really appreciate it. :)

Thanks for that Robin. I have also been looking at NASH as later transcriptions have been under this variant. I'm interested in Emma, as she was born in Reading, Berks. Not far from Beech Hill where Joseph is supposed to have been born.

Thanks for your time in looking this up.
