WHAT information should be in a one-place study?
What sort of things are essential to have..... what sort of things are optional?
I'll start it off....
Place description
Map(s)
Names and details of churches and chapels
Schools
Transcript of parish registers for baptisms, marriages and burials
Transcript of censuses for the village 1841 onwards.
Transcripts from county directories (people) for various years
more.... ??

Really, no information is optional!
How about Settlement orders, Removal orders, Filliation orders, Land deeds, Muster Rolls, Hearth Taxes, Window Taxes, oh the list goes on!

I agree with John. Any and all information is useful. To his list I would add sasines, valuation rules, testaments, Church session minutes, Presbytery minutes, and any odd bits of national- level history that would have a local effect.
Then there's the more esoteric stuff. I have recently come across a printed catalogue for the subscription library in the village in the 19th century, as well as the plans and builders estimates for the upgrading of the Manse during the 19th century.
Of course, all photos and postcards are worth their weight in rubies!

Best place to look for views is eBay ... currently 17000 UK topographical postcards up for auction (double that for completed items)... many can be had for a few pennies ;) . Set up a favorite search and get email notification if something you're interested in turns up.
