Hi,
I'm just starting to write up my Bremner family history. Though most of them were in Cullen, Banffshire, two brothers lived at Begg's Buildings about 30 years apart!
The first brother lived at 13a Begg's Buildings, Canongate district of Edinburgh in 1880-1881. Though in the 1881 census it is listed as A block, Beggs Building, South Leith, Edinburgh.
The second brother was living at 3 Begg's Buildings, Abbeyhill, Newington district of Edinburgh in 1906.
From searching the internet, it is likely that these buildings are part of the co-op "colonies" set up by Reverend Begg to improve housing for the working class.
Would anyone with local knowledge know whether there was only one set of Begg's Buildings and the district name just changed over time, or were there many groups of Begg's buildings dotted around Edinburgh?
Are there any photos of these buildings, or the area in general available?
Any information would be appreciated.
thanks,
Michelle
