What a pity your Drakes did not stop off in Devon on their way from Cornwall to Dorset - or vice versa! I have Drakes in my tree, but they seem to be firmly in Devon at the moment - and I never seem to stop off in Devon on my way to Cornwall on holiday to go to the RO!

About the only DRAKE in our family that stayed in Devon for any length of time, was my father in law.

At the risk of being tried for heresy, there are some lovely places to holiday in Devon! I quite like North Devon and Somerset - I used to go to Wiveliscombe in Somerset every year for a holiday to stay with my Aunt and Uncle and we took trips all over the North Devon area.

Lately, there have been rich pickings in the RO in Truro and they have called me there!! However, after learning nothing new this summer, maybe next year it will be Devon.......!

Devon is beautiful. Last Thursday, Frank and I drove up to a little village called Spreyton (Frank spent his childhood years there.) Spreyton has got to be one of the nicest villages I have ever visited - have you ever been there?
Set in the foothills of Dartmoor, with tiny thatched cottages, little shop cum Post Office, a church, a pub called The Uncle Tom Cobley and some of the friendliest people I have ever met. Spreyton is quite perfect, and if you ever get the chance, you must pay a visit.
Okay! I know this has nothing at all to do with my research names, but I just had to tell you about Spreyton - a real time warp.

Hi Pam and Frank,
I am a Drake and they came from Whitchurch, Devon (1500s-1700s) and Wolborough (1700s-1900s). I have it fairly well mapped out but always keen to look for new information and fellow researchers.
I am interested in Drakes from the SW of England, having now moved on to DNA testing to map out the larger Drake tree. It's been very interesting and made connections where the papertrail would not have been possible.
Please drop me a line if interested.
cheers
David

Hi David,
Our DRAKE line seems to have come from Dorset but will certainly PM you the details if you would like them.

Hi Pam,
I just noticed your thread and wanted to ask you about two of the surnames on your list.
JAMES (Cornwall): I have a number of JAMES in my tree, all of whom lived in Gwennap, near Redruth. The earliest I have found so far is John JAMES (my 5xg-grandfather) who married Ann MOSS on April 24, 1756. Have you found any Gwennap connections among your JAMESs?
BURRIDGE (Devon): My great-grandaunt, Cecilia ROOKE, married a John BURRIDGE from Brixham in 1882. Although the marriage took place in Cornwall (Cecilia was from St. Day), the couple lived and raised their family in Newton Abbot. John’s parents were Nicholas and Mary BURRIDGE (maiden name unknown). Did any of your BURRIDGEs came from Brixham or Newton Abbot?
Let me know if you think we may have any common links and I’ll be happy to provide additional details.

My JAMES family do not appear to have ventured off the Lizard and my BURRIDGE family came from Crediton. I confess that I have not done much work on the BURRIDGE family. I guess I am getting lazy in my old age!
