Glad to see another Adelaidian on the site. I am a newbie.
I have Rees in my family too, but they are from Cardiganshire.

Straw - Derbyshire
Any particular parts of Derbyshire?
Hi Guys
Haven't been on here properly for a few weeks. It was a glorious day here as well especially as I had the day off!
My grandfather was Evan Oliver Phillips, born in 1909 in Pontypridd, his mother was Ellen Rees and his father was David Phillips. My grandfather had an older brother (Tudor) and sister (Janet), they were a few years older than my grandfather. I have found a Phillips/Rees family on the 1901 census who I think are the right ones, there is mention of another child David who was born in 1898, Janet was born in 1895 and Tudor 1903, my grandfather never mentioned another brother so perhaps he died before my grandfather was born and he was never mentioned, I have found a death of a David Phillips in 1903, so he could be the right one. My grandfathers mother Ellen died when my grandfather was quite young, my great grandfather remarried (no idea to whom as yet) and had a couple more children as yet still no idea who they are.
Ellen Rees's parents were David and Mary Rees, he was a shoemaker, on the 1901 census there is some more rees's on the same street, so I don't know if they belong to my family or not.
Have you found it hard with everyone having the same name? There are so many David Phillips all born in Wales in the same year that it is going to be along slow process and for my nan, hers are Jones's |banghead|
Ah well at least it keeps us off the streets haha, Don't know if this is much help, nice to meet other aussies though!
Hi Patrisia
It seems to be Ilkeston, but there are lots of names the same there as well, why o why did everyone call their children the same name!!!!

Who are you looking for in particular? I have PR's 1800-41 and Baptisms 1841-1901, so may be able to help. But there are an awful lot of them.

Hi Zane,
Welcome to the Rees maze!
My gx2.gr.father was John Lewis Rees 1818-1859, same as his father, but they seem to have all been from St. Peters, Carmarthen for generations, and they were nearly all boot/shoe makers.
As to the Derbys. Straws - do you have any details at all, eg dates & names?
I have some Straw members on my database, though not many; they are mostly in Heanor but also some that originated in Ilkeston.
