Hi,
I'm tracing two Jewish families, the Silverstones and the Edlers, who were in Stepney, Shoreditch and Spittalfields from the 1840s or 50s. Which synagogues would have served these areas? How would you go about trying to trace country of origin if not known?

from my experience of the older Jewish Records most are only accessable with the written permission of Board of Deputies of British Jews, even if held by other archives like the London Metropolitan

good luck, I have found it takes lots of patience chasing Jewish ancestors, but sometimes you get lucky

Sandiep when you say you looked at Great Synagogue 1791-1850 how did you do that ? I would like some information on DAVID EMANUEL whose name appears on the marriage details of his son LEWIS EMANUEL who married 4th August 1819 RACHEL HENDRIKS (daughter of Abraham Hendriks). I know they had connections with the Great Synagogue but have no access to those records.
Also what does 2985 Gittela wife of Leib b David EMANUEL = Kitty wife of Lewis Emanuel mean exactly? Thank you for any help you can provide.

The only information about DAvid EMANUEL in the Great Synagogue Marroage Registers 1791 - 1850 by Angela Shire is that he was the father of Lewis EMANUEL.
The entry transcription says that Lewis EMANUEL was a Privd (priviledged) member of the Great Synagogue and his Hebrew name was Yehuda Leib he married
I am not sure what the number refers to but I would say that Gittela wife of Leib is the hebrew names of Lewis and his wife.
I am careful here not to say that Gittela is the hebrew name of Rachel because this is something that you will need to confirm with marriage bonds and stuff.

Dear Ladkyis and Sandiep - thank you for taking the time to rpely. Much appreciated. I thought I was at the end of the line but it seems I need to gain a little more understanding into how the Jewish records were kept. Thanks again
Robert
