I've never come across a Lettice in any branch of the tree. My Hopwoods move around quite a lot. They don't move that far, but they move often. Sort of in the area between Leeds, Halifax, Sheffield and Doncaster. There're also a few in Durham. My ggg grandfather Hopwood was born in 1835. Lettice could possibly be a cousin of his but she's not his sister. Well, unless she died in infancy.

I'm having trouble finding any Wards. The one I do have (John Chapman Ward) was born in Leeming, Bedale, NRY (it seems) and married in Whitby which isn't far from Stainton Dale and Harwood Dale so it's possible. His 10 children were born in various places in the North and West ridings.

Oh darn! She was my great grand-mother on my mother's side. Married a John Lawton.
It was worth a shot.:)

Now Lawtons I do have. Lawton was my grandfather's middle name and I now know it was his grandfather's first name and Lawton's mother's maiden name. I don't have many Lawtons as it was so far back but I don't suppose your John ties in with a Joseph Lawton b1785, wife Sarah Medley? They had 5 sons and 5 daughters all in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

There maybe a connection somewhere.....but I'm finding the Lawtons are hard to trace
Where is Dewsbury in relation to Saddleworth?
I can only go back to a George Lawton b.about 1811 in Saddleworth - I think (not sure about that I need to access praish records). He ended up in Stalybridge Cheshire.

Saddleworth is around 25 miles away from Dewsbury. Joseph had a son William in 1812 but as far as I know Joseph didn't have any brothers so unless one of his sisters had George out of wedlock, they're probably not connected. At least not until a bit further back.

Mmmmm! Bother! 25 miles is not that far - thou' in those days it would have been a finely long trip. Drat!:(
Anyone have access to parish records in Saddleworth who could do a lookup?
We need a begging smilie......

Hi,
I have Frederick and Ellen Clark in West Yorkshire from 1869 to 1915 ish.
Also, James Gaunt m. Maud Whiteley in Armley, Leeds 1940 ( Maud, daughter of Mary Clark and John Henry Whiteley)
I also have a George Berry who lost his Mother and was brought up by my Gt Grandfather Harry Clark.
It would be great if any of this makes sense to you!
