I will be on holiday for a week around Plymouth and would like to spend some time locating information on John Bibby born Plymouth in 1813, became a master mariner and moved to Liverpool. The only information I have is off the census record when he was in the Liverpool area stating he was born in Plymouth. can any one tell me the best places to look in Plymouth as time is of an essence
Thanks Eric Bibby
Hi Eric,
Two points here.
Firstly Bibby is not a common name in Devon so as he was of seafaring people he may have been born in Plymouth but not resident. You need to search the baptismal records around 1813 for Plymouth parishes especially those near the coast. His wife Ann was a Yorkshire woman, have you located the marriage? If he married after 1837 his father's name will be on the marriage certificate.
Secondly his daughter Elizabeth in 1881 says born Dudley, this in itself seems odd as it states she is married but she is also called Bibby, she is either his daughter in law or she married a man also called Bibby. I have relatives in the Dudley area of Worcestershire named Bibbey. There is the extra 'E' but that is neither here nor there in early 19th century.

Probably the best place to start will be the West Devon Record Office in Plymouth.

The entrance is quite hard to spot as it is set in an area of factory units. It will also be worth contacting them to check on opening times & to book a reader.
You will need some ID to register with them but I found it quick and painless. The Office is small by Record Office standards but the staff are very friendly and helpful

The DFHS Three Towns CD shows:
Plymouth St Andrew Church baptisms
28 Aug 1814 John BIBBEY son of Henry & Dorothy of Plymouth. Father: Shipman HM York
Henry BIBBY Married Dorothy TUCKER at Plymouth Charles 30 May 1809.
These notes summarise what I've found out about John Bibby and now his parents. They start at William Bibby, 1846-1926, a direct ancestor of my wife Sue (nee Bibby). Please check the facts and logic!
William Bibby was born 20 Sep 1846. Birth Cert shows:
Father: John Bibby, Mariner
Mother: Ann Bibby, formerly Iley
of 12 Shannon Street, Liverpool
1851 Census: Ann Bibby living at 9 Paternoster Row, Birkenhead, with William aged 4. John was probably at sea. Ann is shown as born in Yorkshire, aged 35 (born abt 1816). Other children are Henry (10), Matthew (8), John (8), and Hannah (9 months).
1861 Census: John Bibby, Seaman Merchant Service, aged 46 (born abt 1815), born Plymouth, Cornwall. His wife is Ann (47), born in Burlington, Yorkshire. Family includes William Bibby (14), and Hannah W (11).
1871 Census: John Bibby at 74 Victoria Road, aged 57, Ship master unemployed, born Plymouth, Devon. He is a widow. (An Ann Bibby, of Tranmere, died in 1866 and aged 55 - could be a match)
1881 Census: John Bibby, widow, aged 67, a retired Master Mariner, living with his son William and wife Elizabeth (nee Plumbe).
John Bibby made his Will in 1885, and died 7th June 1888. The executors were Henry and William Bibby, his sons. The Will also mentions his daughter Hannah Wynne, the wife of Edward William Sprake.
All these facts show consistently that John’s wife was Ann. The Iley link on William’s birth certificate is key, as it links to the correct marriage which allows us to work backwards:
The marriage certificate of John Bibby and Ann Hiley gives the following information:
Married 4th November 1839, in St Brides Church, Liverpool:
John Bibby, bachelor, Mariner, of Gore Street. Father: Henry Bibby, Mariner
Ann Hiley, spinster, of Wood Street. Father: Ralph Hiley, Carpenter.
The marriage was witnessed by Thomas Ithell and Caroline Bibby.
The 1841 Census shows Henry Bibby, aged 55, sailor, living at Hope Place, Gore Street, born same county. His wife is shown as Dorothy, aged 50, Green Grocer, also born same county. At the same address are Thomas Itell, aged 20,enginer driver, and Caroline Itell, aged 20, born same county. Of significance is the fact that a Caroline Bibby married a Thomas Ishill / Ithill / Ithell at St Bride with St Saviour, Liverpool in the first Quarter of 1840 (UK BMD Vol 20 p148). The different spellings come from UK BMD and Lancashire BMD indexes, but match the marriageAJohn Bibby made his Will in 1885, and died 7th June 1888. The executors were Henry and William Bibby, his sons. The Will also mentions his daughter Hannah Wynne, the wife of Edward William Sprake.

This gives John’s parents as
Father: Henry Bibby, born around 1786 in Liverpool;
Mother: Dorothy, born around 1791 in Liverpool;
Sister: Caroline, born around 1820, in Liverpool.
Indeed, a Caroline Bibby was born in Liverpool around 1820 with parents Henry and Dorothy (Steve Bibby’s records).
Now we have information that a John Bibby was baptised at St Andrew Church, Plymouth on 28 Aug 1814, son of Henry and Dorothy. Father was a Shipman on HM York.
Further, Henry Bibby married Dorothy Tucker at Plymouth on 30 May 1809.
So, it appears Henry Bibby was born in Liverpool around 1786, and went to Plymouth, where he met Dorothy Tucker and they were married. John was born in Plymouth in 1814. By 1820 the family had moved back to Liverpool.
Jeremy,
Yes, we have just received John and Ann's MC, which show Henry as the father - see my previous post about the marriage.
Second point: the Elizabeth you mention inthe 1881 Census is most likely Elizabeth Plumbe, the wife of William Bibby. She was born in Dudley, Worcestershire (also appears in 1891 and 1901 censuses).
Thanks for your interest!
Regards,
Rob
