William was born in 1828/29 in Bury St Edmunds and his father was William also. The Father William is listed as occupation Grocer on the younger William's marriage certificate in 1849 so the 1841 census for Bury St Edmunds may show the family together.

There is a William Place of the right age in Bury St Edmunds, but sadly he is a servant and there is no sign of his father.

Churchgate Street, Bury St Edmunds St Mary [HO 107/1042/8]
It is difficult to see which household he is in, but he seems to be in the very busy house of John Watson, a grocer aged 41, and his wife Susan, 45. The place is full of their children and apparently John's parents and a few apprentice and servant types.
William Place, 13, MS, born in county.

There are no other Places in the parish. There is a William Place of the right age to be his father in nearby Lakenheath, but he is a farmer.

Place seems to be a common name in this area, especially Mildenhall.

Sorry that wasn't much help.

Thanks Pat, I had seen the Lakenheath farmer and some in Mildenhall but on all documents I've seen William says he was born in B. St E. He also has his father alive and stating he is a Grocer at his wedding. This one you have found seems promising as the family ended up in Churchgate. I am at a loss where to look now for the family. Thanks again,

Martin.
