Hi all,

I'm trying to follow my paternal g.grandfather's tree, but can't seem to find out anymore, than what I already have.

My g.grandfather was Edward Evans. He was born c.1893.
He signed up to the army c.1914, and went out to the Somme.
He trained in Bedfordshire.

He married my g.grandmother, Maude Bruce, on 30th October 1915, at the Parish Church, St Paul Bedford. They both lived at 66 Coventry Road at the time.

Edwards father is name as Richard Evans and was an Engineer at the time of the marriage.
Edward's written age on the cert is 23.

I have no idea where Edward was born or grew up, and without any more specifics I can't go back much further there.

If anyone has any advice. it will be gratefully received.

Beth

Have you tried to find him in the 1901 census? you do not need an exact location to find him. He should be still living at home then. Someone with a subscription may be able to help.

Christine :)

Have you his marriage cert? Father's occupation may help. As he married in Bedford, I guess none of the witnesses to the wedding were Evans? There are Edwards on the 1901 with a father Richard but would be easy to go up the wrong tree without more info.

What about army record. There is a WW1 medal card on the TNA website for an Edward from the Bedfordshire Regt. You can download this for £3.50. Don't think it will give DOB (can't remember!) but it should give enough info for you to trace his record.

Hi Beth,
As Karen says there are Edward Evans with a Richard for a father in 1901 but only one seems to totally fit your Gt. Grandfather which is as follows:-

RG13/222 Folio 119 Page 48
57 Abbott Street, Hackney,
Richard W Evans 31 Pressman boot trade
Elizabeth wife 29
Richard son 8
Edward son 7
Henry son 4
Florence dau 2
William son 1
Charles son 10 days

Elizabeth was born Bethnal Green, all the others born Hackney.

This is a guide for you to hopefully build on but as I'm sure you already know, you will need to substantiate this information before going further.

Thank you. I'm unsure as to whether that is him, because most of the family seem to think he was born in Monmouthshire.
I think I need to get hold of his army number, would it be on his medals?
