I'm looking for information of his wife's maiden name and marriage details for Stephen Eplett, born Padstow area, in 1809 or 1812 depending from where you get the dates.
Stephen's wife was named Elizabeth (Betsy on 1841 census), who was also listed as being from Padstow.
His 4 children were all born, according to census forms, in Shoreditch, London (1835-1842) and I'm supposing Stephen & Elizabeth may have married in London as there is no record of a marriage in OPC Cornwall records.
As they married before 1837 it’s going to be a struggle to find any details elsewhere.
Sources are:
1841 Census - Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 667; Book: 5; Civil Parish: St Luke; County: Middlesex; Enumeration District: 1; Folio: 16; Page: 24; Line: 14; GSU roll: 438783.
Children are: Thomas 6, William 3, Elizabeth 1.
1851 Census Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 1523; Folio: 26; Page: 44
Children are: Thomas 16, William 13, Elizabeth 11, Mary 9.
1861 census Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 151; Folio: 33; Page: 15
No children at home (only a granddaughter)
From FreeBMD - Deaths Mar 1868 - EPLETT, Stephen Aged 56, Islington. Volume 1b Page 144.
Elizabeth’s death was registered Q2 1872 Islington 1b/140 Aged 70

Would anyone have any idea of marriage details and if so, what Elizabeth's maiden name was.

Thanks in anticipation
John

No, but if all else fails, here's an idea for you to explore.

From the IGI, as extracted entries not speculative ones, we have baptisms of kids of Stephen and Elizabeth (I'm abbreviating here to save fingers - take a look at them for more detail):
Thomas 1835 St Luke Old Street
William 1838 St Leonard Shoreditch
Elizabeth 1840 St Leonard Shoreditch
Mary 1842 St Leonard Shoreditch

From FreeBMD, their parents do not seem to have clogged up the local Register Office by their presence.
Meanwhile, on FreeBMD in 1841 June quarter, we find a birth entry that the transcriber had a bit of difficulty with:
EPLETT Louisa Jane Alice Haw___ Shoreditch 2 386

I'm going out, so don't have much time, and I'll leave you to rummage properly in the actual GRO index etc., but...
She's not in the baptisms.
Were there really two Eplett families kicking around Shoreditch - or is this the usual "one thing or the other but not both" performance in the early days of civil registration, so the kids who are baptised aren't in the GRO index, and one who is *not* baptised appears in the GRO index instead?
Can you spot this Louisa elsewhere, belonging to someone else?
If not, is there a death for her?
If so, she's likely to be theirs too, and her birth cert would give mother's maiden name - though it wouldn't suprise me if that incomplete fourth forename is a clue - Hawker, Hawkins, whatever.

Hi Mythology
Many thanks for the information - I had the children listed in the 1851 census but, as you say, nothing in FreeBMD.
However, looking through the indexes on Ancestry I've just, this evening, found a Mary Eplatt in Q2 1842 registered in St Lukes Vol 2 Page 279.
I'll send off for her certificate next week and see what that throws up, in the meantime searching in case I can find the others.
By the way, the Louisa you referred to should read Louisa Jane Alice Hawkey and the page number should read 385 I'll take a chance with her certificate as well.

First post, great response - many thanks

John

Hi John

I too am looking for info re Stephen and Elizabeth as am descended from their son Thomas. His daughter Jenny/Jessy was my great grandmother. There is a family legend that she was a music hall entertainer and Jewish; have discovered she did work in the music halls but no evidence she was Jewish - do you know at all?

Am sure I have got info that Elizabeth's surname was possibly Duggo however have been all through my gumpf and can't find where that gem came from, so not sure of its authenticity.

Regards

Gina
