Hoping someone can help me to discover if the THOMAS BENNETT who I believe arrived in VICTORIA on 24 DEC 1852 on the COVENANTER age 27 came from Newcastle upon Tyne. He married an ELIZABETH CARTLEDGE in 1859. It is possible/probable that they had both been married before. ELIZABETH also arrived in Victoria around 1852/3. THOMAS probably arrived by unassisted passage, while ELIZABETH travelled by goverment assisted passage. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

There is this chap on the 1851 census.
Lambeth, Lambeth St Mary, Surrey, Lambeth Church First,
14 North Street.
Thomas Bennett 25 born Newcastle on Tyne, Lodger, Engineer.
HO107; Piece: 1571; Folio: 361; Page: 22; GSU roll: 174805.
I cannot particularly see him after that, so could be a possible.

The Victorian Index has only one Thomas BENNETT marrying an Elizabeth in 1859 - Elizabeth BROWN - reg number: 3627
This marriage certificate will record the parents names, including the mother's maiden name. Usually the birthplace county is given, but may just say England. It will also say if the couple have been married before, and give the numbers of children from the previous marriage, living and dead.
Elizabeth's first marriage - to Thomas BROWN as Elizabeth CARTLEDGE, 1853, St James Church of England. This appears to be a parish record so her parents will not be recorded. (civil reg came in July of that year)
reg number: 6216
Sorry I cannot answer your question re: Thomas' arrival, but the name is fairly common. One will need to check the actual passenger list.

And, just to complicate things, there is also a second Elizabeth CARTLEDGE having children, appears to be married to a Matthew GOY.
