STOVEL, Stovold, STovell variants. From Surrey, Sussex.
Is a poor house an almshouse?
I need to find Wm & Elizabeth in 1841 British Census. Their last child, Elizabeth, was possibly born in Kingston, Surrey.
IGI:
William Stovold b. '1778, Nov 28, Wm. Son of William and Diana Stovold'.
Wm Stovold m. 30 Nov 1775 to Diney Winge, at Farnham.
Presume Diney is a pet name for someone called Diana.
In the 1851 census,
1851 Merton parish census, Surrey
William Stovel 72y 1779 b. Farnham Surrey
Elizabeth Stovel 74 yr Ref 265a 1777 b. Hitchen, Herts
Samuel Stovell 66y REf 257a 1785 b. Farnham, Surrey
I have looked through our copy of the 1841 cenus for Merton & Morden but have been unable to find any reference to a William or Elizabeth Stovell. ( Some of the later entries are rather hard to decipher but I cannot spot the relevant names. )
There is a reference to a Samual Stovell and family- this is as follows:
1841 Census, Merton & Morden, p9
Samuel Stovel, 50, Agricultural Labourer, Born Surrey 1781
Sarah Stovel, 42, Born Surrey 1799
Amelia Stovel, 25, Born Surrey 1816
Sarah Stovel, 12, Born Surrey 1829
They are all listed as resident in the Poor Houses, which seem to have been in the Church Row / Merton Rush area. No further detail is given. (Surrey History Centre)
p. 257 1851 Census St Mary's Parish, Merton
1851 Samuel Stovell Lodger at The RUSH Widower age 66 Ag Lab is occupation born Surrey Farnham 1785
Richard Cook isd'.

Dear Sarah,
I usually see Wm & Elizabeth Stovel with L. Below you list them and Samuel with LL:. Is Samuel listed in the 1841 census with one L. IN 1851 census he’s listed with LL.
I suspect The Rush as listed in 1851 refers to what you term below as Merton Rush. Below is my snail mail address for the Ordinance Survey map.. Thanks so much. Could you also include Samuel Stovel in 1841 census. Thanks. Do you have indexes for earlier censuses?
Merton Rush was the name given to a small area just south of Kingston Road, Merton Park, near Watery Lane and Manor Road.
The area included a number of small weather-boarded cottages, so it is possible that Samuel Stovell was resident in one of these - they may not have been given individual numbers until a later date. If you would like to e-mail your postal address head age 78 occup: pauper receiving parish relief.

Elizabeth Ditto mar. 74 Herts Hitchin blind?
