In trying to trace some of my Vallis rellies, I have had reported that a John Vallis of Somerset (probably Evercreech) served on HMS Shannon in the 1812-1814 War and was killed in the action against the Chesapeake. I don't have an exact date of this John - as he is reportedly one of four brothers who dispersed to various parts of the globe. The family I have in mind for these 4 brothers would make that in their early teens.

I did spot that about 80 British sailors where killed including 13 boys under 12!

Any sources that anyone can suggest please - or has ?

H.F. Pullen's book, "The Shannon and the Chesapeake", shows total dead and wounded aboard HMS Shannon as about 80. About 34 were killed outright or died of wounds, including one James Wallis(also spelled Wallace),able seaman, 3 June, 1813, who was also one of those few who boarded Chesapeake during the action. On the ship's muster roll, his entry shows Nov. 1, 1810, place born as Dumphries. His age is shown as 24, and he was listed as able seaman, then coxwain's mate Oct. 12, 1812. I could find no one named John Vallis, from Somerset. Sorry. I too have an ancestor upon whose tombstone an inscription reads "Fought on the Shannon" His name was John Wynn, but I cannot find his name on the muster rolls ,either. I understand that misspellings were not uncommon. Hope I have been of some help.

You'll need The National Archives.

The following links do not contain lists of names online, they are catalogued references - you either have to visit TNA, or order the documents (hard copy, or digital express)

Thanks VERY MUCH Gules - A comprehensive list!

It certainly eliminated |banghead| the lead I have been following up - and it also shows that old queries do get looked at by fellow forumites - and sometimes answered!!

I therefore |bowdown| to all on here. Thanks to all your efforts.
