I am trying to help my friend Suzie from Orkney: her research in England is difficult due to distance (and the costs of travelling!).
She is searching for James COMPTON, her gt grandfather. He married in 1876, died 1880. On marriage he said he was 28, widower, labourer, father James COMPTON a carpenter. He is not on the 1871 census in his place of marriage (Burton on Trent), place of death (Hanbury) nor in north-west Leicestershire (home of his wife Emma).
However, there is a single James Compton on the 1871 census in Bolton Lancashire. Born Little Bolton, father James a counterpane weaver. Young James appears to be also working in the cotton industry (Stripper....der). His parents are shown as James & Elizabeth, both aged 64, and his 30-something (numbers disfigured on the scan) sister is Hannah who is a cotton winder.
Can anyone can shed light on this young man's exploits after 1871? I have not found a positive match for him on the 1881 transcribed version.
With thanks in anticipation!
Jacqui
