cliff surname in shropshire

I am trying to find a marriage for Daniel Cliff married to Margaret ? in Whitchurch shrops about 1769 ish also his father John Cliff who married Mary Roe Whitechurch about 1840-45 can any one help. I have looked on ancestry parish records with no luck, has anyone got any suggestions please Eileen6

John Cliff married Mary Roe 29 Dec 1744 according to the IGI.

Daniel Cliff married Margaret Reeves 30 Nov 1794 again on the IGI. There are plenty more Cliffs if you search using reference number M037561.

Thankyou Peter your reply was helpful and I will have a look on IGI but how do I find out what they did for a living? Eileen6

Not always easy to find out pre-1837. If you're luckly you may find an inventory of a business following someone's death or maybe they employed an apprentice?
I'm lucky in that my family were clay tobacco pipe makers and their product survives - no good if you're from a long line of bakers I guess.

I would start by finding a relative who died just after 1837 and applying for their death certificate - that should give their occupation. If you can find the GRO reference from a website like http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
you can apply online - it will cost you £7.

Also marriage certificates should list the occupation of the father as well.

The Cliff family you are refering to lived in Ash Magna near Whitchurch, Eliza the daughter of John Cliff was my great grandmother. I visited Ash Magna a couple of weeks ago and the blacksmiths shop they ran is still there,also I found the family graves in the local church yard. If you would like any more information I will be happy to help.

Hi Eric, I finally found your message and we do have the same relatives then. I can't look at my notes just now as I,m in the middle of decorating but if my memory serves me well I think John Cliff had a son Daniel who was my direct line. I would love to hear more of Ash Magna I had no idea the Cliffs came from there I only had Whitchurch. Any info you have would be gratefully received. Best Wishes Eileen6
