I am researching my wifes gggrandfather Phineas BARNETT (1819 - 1877) who was born in Prussia. In 1846 he married Sarah JONES (1827 - 1882) in London. The marriage certificate gives his fathers name as Getz FLAVIN, a publican. From the date of their marriage until their deaths I am able to locate them with the exception of the 1861 census. He was Jewish and a slipper maker by trade finally settling in Bristol.
I was wondering if there was anyone out there who could help me in tracing him back before his marriage.

Hi Mike,
Sorry for the delay in replying.
1. Do you know where in Prussia?
2. Have you tried NTA catalogue to see if he was naturalised, because if he was there will be a POB listed.
3. Have you tried JewishGen website and looked at Family Finder for FLAVIN (sic) and see what that brings up?
Best wishes,
Sherry

Thanks Sherry.
Unfortunately I do not know which city he was from. The 1851 census just stated Preuben which I understand is German for Prussia. On this census he is living in Whitechapel and has a lodger also from Prussia named Jacob JACOBSON.
I have tried Jewishgen but did not obtain any results for FLAVIN. I will try the naturalisation register to see if he is there.
Thanks again
Mike

It is probably no connection but who knows! I've been looking for my 'Servant' grandfather who worked for Maurice Henry Barnett (also Jewish)living at 61 Hamilton Tce, St Johns Wood London. According to the 1881 census Mauriice was an Umbrella maker. He married Maria (Marie Sternberg) in 1873 she was born in Belgium. Maurice was born in Maryleborne c 1849.
Good luck!
