Hello,
Please can someone help me? I live in South Africa and find it a little difficult (and rather costly) to access some of the relevant records - if they exist.
I have been searching for marriage and birth details for Robert and Ann Ireland. According to the 1841 England Census, they were living in Gislingham with their two boys - John and Benjamin. I have no maiden name for Ann (born abt 1821) and no parents or exact birth date (abt 1811) for Robert. I do know that they left England for South Africa in 1849 on the King William and Robert died on that voyage.
A Robert Ireland's marriage was registered in the last quarter of 1840 in the district of Hartismere.
I would be extremely grateful for any details anyone could give me.
My thanks to all,
Denise.

Hello Denise,
The registration for the marriage of Robert Ireland in Dec 1840 at Hartismere
does not have a spouse listed. 13/1008c
(He seemingly did not marry anyone :) )
The only possible match I could find for an Ann in Hartismere in 1840 was Ann Woodward. 13/1108 (It is strange because she did not marry anyone either :) )
Maybe a more experienced member could explain for us.

I also noticed, that may interest you, if you did not know already. Another Ireland family living just a few doors from Robert and Ann in 1841.
Betsy and Samuell are old enough to be Robert's parents.

Betsy Ireland abt 1791 Suffolk, England Gislingham
John Ireland abt 1829 Suffolk, England Gislingham
Mary Ireland abt 1821 Suffolk, England Gislingham
Matilda Ireland abt 1826 Suffolk, England Gislingham
Samuell Ireland abt 1791 Suffolk, England Gislingham

Class: HO107; Civil Parish: Gislingham; County: Suffolk; Enumeration District: 11; Page: 5;

Hope this helps,
Mutley

Hello Mutley,
Thanks very much for your reply to my post. Yes, I find it strange that I can't find Ann anywhere. Being Wesleyan Methodists, I wonder if their records are in some obscure place I haven't looked yet? As Non-conformist records weren't 'legal' for many years, maybe that's why the records show no spouses.

Yes, Betsy and Samuell are the right ages and Robert and Ann named 2 of their children John and Mary Ann. So maybe I am on the right track and just have to delve deeper!

Thanks, again for the info; I shall add it to my "To Search" list.

Regards,
Denise.

I don't know if this will be a hindrance or a help, but found this marriage on Family History online.

Robert Ireland
Dinah Blomfield

11th November,1834 - Gislingham

both of the parish.

---------------

I think the 1840 marriage for Robert is his one to Ann. The page Ann is listed on probably hasn't been transcribed yet, thats why he is listed on his own.

But then I found her death on the NBI

Dinah Ireland bur 6th Jan, 1840 aged 28yrs at Gislingham.

Is it possible that Dinah could have been the mother of the two little boys in the 1841 census.

Heres the birth ref of Benjamin.

Benjamin Ireland

You could get the birth cert to find out who mum was, BUT from the IGI a submitted entry (treat with caution)

saying Benjamin, son of Robert and Dinah.
---------------
John Ireland born 1st July,1836 and bap. 6th Sep.1836 at the Wesleyan Methodist,Diss,Norfolk of the same parents as above.

Hello Sue,

You are an angel! Thank you very much for all the info you posted. Up until now, I have had no hint that Robert may have been 2x married but did seriously wonder about Ann being so young at son John's birth! Now, with Dinah in the puzzle, it all makes sense.
I ordered Benjamin's birth cert a few weeks ago but got most of my money returned because "Ann was not his mother". I will apply again this morning with Dinah as his mother.
You've given me a whole new avenue to search and I am thrilled.

Thanks again,
Denise.

Hello Sue,

Wow! Thank you again, for all the great info. Looks like you've opened up a whole new world for me. Of course, I won't take it all as 'gospel' and I will check it - as you advise.

This is all very exciting..... You've made my whole week!

Denise.
