Hi everyone,
I need to find a death entry for a cousin in the UK for the following name please, I have checked Vic, Nsw, Qld and Wa indexes for the period in question with no result. My hunch would be SA?

"I am looking for my Grandmother's brother, Benjamin J. Cattell born London 1869. The family were Methodists and when he was about 18 he travelled with a group as Methodist missionaries to Australia. He died there soon afterwards of pneumonia, so my Grandma told me. I remember her showing me a picture of the gravestone with the young men standing round with their hats on their hearts. They had the picture taken to send to his family. His funeral was paid for by the Y M C A which was started by the Methodist movement."

Thanks in advance,
Bridget.

Hi Bridget,

Nothing in SA I am afraid.

Also checked Tas.

Mind you, I think that Cattell is an unusual enough name to have been misrecorded.

Do you have details of his parents?

Found him in the 1871/1881 UK census I think - father William?

Have rechecked with that information and still cannot find him.

Have you seen this site?

Hi Bridget,
I am unable to help you with your actual request but I can give you a few pointers. As Procat already says Benjamin Cattell is on the 1871/81 censuses with a father William J Cattell (wife in 71 is Margaret & in 81 is Mary) I have searched fairly extensively and I cannot find the family on the 1891 census. However the father is registered dead in Holborn in Jan/Mar 1892 Vol 1b Page 683 aged 65. Benjamin's sister Grace Ruth's marriage is also registered in Holborn Apr/Jun 1892. I am not sure if you have seen the information on the censuses or not but Benjamin's grandmother was Elizabeth Cattell. I have also found a death registration for a child I think is likely to be Benjamin's brother:- William Joseph Cattell Jul/Sep 1868 Clerkenwell Vol 1b Page 481 age 1.

Cheers Jeremy

Thanks everyone.

My cousin lives in England, she has researched the records in England so I am not looking into that for her, specifically looking for records in Australia for Benjamin's death. My cousin's grandmother was Grace Ruth, the lost Benjamin is her brother.

Regards,
Bridget.

Hi Bridget,

The Methodist archives may be able to assist you.

There is (apparently) an ongoing project to record the details of the preachers and missionaries.

See:

http://rylibweb.man.ac.uk/data1/dg/methodist/bio/bioind.html

Your man is not there but a direct approach to the organisation may result in locating his death.
