Two websites that I feel are vastly under-rated are Genuki and GenWeb at
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/
and
http://www.britishislesgenweb.org/
respectively.
Both have lots of information about things in general e.g. civil registration, as well as information about counties, towns, etc.
One interesting feature of Genuki that I've recently discovered is the Gazetteer.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/Gazetteer/
enter placename (and county if known).
clcicking on the OS Grid reference will take you to another page with links to maps and nearby places, and 'how far away is xxx'. Click on that, type in the place you want to know the distance to from the place you first thought of - and bingo. All distances are 'as the crow flies', but still give you a reasonable idea of the mileage.
