Firstly i would like to say hello to everyone, what a wonderful site. I am a newbie please be gentle with me.
I am doing a bit of research into (a bank or banks) in Birkenhead in the 1920-1930, near the Ferry Port. There cant of been many but i cant find anything. The story is i am researching for a friend into the Murphy family from Dublin. The decendant used to travel over from Dublin to put his money into a bank in Birkenhead between 1920-1930.Which bank we dont know. My friends mother who was entitled to this money, but did not bother to claim it, and just left it as she didnt need it.There was no will. But the money would or should be still in the bank. We have newspaper clippings from the Sunday Telegraph 1945 about this.I dont know where to start,i thought maybe that i should try tracing the bank ,if anyone has any advice or information it would be highly appreciated.Thanking you all

In the 1940 Kelly's Directory, the following banks had branches in Birkenhead (some more than one branch):
Barclays Bank; District Bank; Liverpool Savings Bank; Llyods Bank; Martins Bank; Midland Bank; National Bank; National Provincial Bank; Westminster Bank.

But this looks like the most likely one: The Royal Bank of Ireland Ltd., (A. R. Riley manager), 59 Hamilton Square and (sub-office) 35 Woodside lairage, Shore Road, Birkenhead. The Liverpool - Birkenhead ferry still runs from Woodside.

I don't know if the Royal Bank of Ireland still exist, or if it has been swallowed up by one of the big banks.

Good luck with your hunt!
