Found the marriage - it shows his age as 29, hers as 22, her name looks like Ida Ann Roberts Godard on the original, her parents are Adolphus W. Godard and Ann Churley Godard. She was born in Canada. They were both Church of England. Were married in Cobourg, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada on 1 June 1886. Their daughter, Sybie (Sylvie?) Povah, married Henry A. Preston on 5 Feb 1909 in Windsor, Essex, Ontario, Canada. Her residence is given as Detroit, Michigan. She is 22, he is 24. Both are Episcopalian (CofE) So, it looks as if they moved to the Detroit area from Ontario.

In the 1900 census, they were all living in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, USA. Edwin was born Oct 1857 in England. They moved to the US in 1888. Ida, born Mar 1864, had 4 children at this point. Sybil A. W. was born in Canada in Jan 1887.Alfred H. W. was born in Michigan in Mar 1889. Douglas A. C. was born in Aug 1890 in Michigan. And Phyllis S. was born in Jul 1893 in Michigan.

In 1910 census, Ida is a widow and listed as head of household, so Edwin must have died between 1900 and 1910 in Detroit. She has 3 youngest children with her, remember Sybil married the previous year just across the border.

In 1920, Ida is still in Detroit. She has only Douglas with her - he is a broker of stocks and bonds (his father had been an insurance agent).

Edwin was still living in England with his parents in the 1881 census, so he emigrated to Canada between 1881 and 1886.

Alfred H. Povah, the son of Edwin and Ida, was born on 25 Mar 1889 and died on 1 Apr 1975 in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, Michigan, USA. He lived in Highland Park, Wayne County, Michigan - just outside Detroit. If you were to send to the vital statistics office in Michigan, or search obituaries in the newspapers for that date, you may find the names of spouses, children, etc.

In 1930, Douglas (age 32) is living in Detroit with his wife Vera T. (age 33) and their 3 daughters Roberta J. and Marian T. (both age 8), and Nancy Ann (age 7). He is still a stockbroker.

There is a Phyllis Povah who worked as an actress - at least she is listed as playing a character in the movie "The Women" in a newspaper article in Ironwood, Michigan in 1939-40, starring Norma Shearer and Rosalind Russell. Perhaps she is the same Phyllis that is Edwin and Ida's daughter?

Just found Phyllis' death - she was born on 21 July 1893 and died on 7 Aug 1975 in Port Washington, Nassau, New York. She lived for a time in Pennsylvania (before 1951) as her Social Security Number was issued there. Either she never married, or continued to be known by her maiden name.
