I am researching a number of Plymouth artists and while I have discovered quite a lot about Philip Hutchings Rogers (1786-1853), I am unable to find his marriage or the probable death of his wife (around 1834). His eldest daughter, Elizabeth Angelina was born in 1821 (date from her marriage cert). The big difficulty is location. He was born in Stoke Damerel, and appears in a number of Plymouth directories, up to 1814. However he was drawn to London and his exhibits at the RA in 1808 and 1813 all have London addresses. He certainly lived in London in the late 1820's.
In these pre-BMD years and not knowing where he lived or where his daughter was born I have run out of ideas.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how I might approach this problem (or better still, have him on their family tree). He is rather an interesting figure and any pointers would be gratefully received.

Have you checked the Dictionary of National Biography?

"After residing abroad for some years, he died in Germany at Lichtenthal, near Baden-Baden, on 25 June 1853, leaving several children."

Not much there but several references given:

Thanks for your thought. I am an art historian so I have read the article, all the references and much else besides and I know quite a lot about his artistic endeavours. The bit that I am missing is information about his wife (marriage, birth of daughters (2) and death). I was hoping that some genealogy experts could suggest how I might fill this gap which probably resulted in his emigration to Germany in about 1835. (where he achieved some artistic success.

The fact that he died in Germany is of some significance and I'm surprised you didn't mention it at the outset.

You may wish to check whether a will was proved in England - it's not impossible. It would also be worth checking the consular returns of births, deaths and marriages.

This looks like a breakthrough for my studies. I've been trying to crack this bit of his personal life for many years. Many, many thanks.
I have his will, a database of about a hundred of his pictures, some of his personal letters, his application form to the Artists Annuity Fund (1829) but have never been able to find any details of his married life. You have now provided the key.
It looks as though only Elizabeth Angelina and Emma Rosa survived childhood as they were, still spinsters, the executrices of his will proved in 1853.
If anyone has any interest in a remarkable group of contemporary painters from Plymouth at this time (all born between 1783 and 1793), including Rogers, Charles Eastlake, Samuel Prout, Benjamin Robert Haydon and Nicholas Condy I would be most happy to share what I know.
Thanks again for your time and expertise.

Well done Terry ...

Scipio, he deserves a credit in your forthcoming book ? How about publishing it on here ? And donating 5% to Rod's School Fund ...

Its not a book, its a PhD thesis which actually costs a lot to produce with no financial gain. And you wouldn't want it published here, it will be about 400 pages long.
However in the spirit of your comment I have just purchased the Kenyan project CD and made a small donation to Rod Neep's project
