View Full Version : James William Firman - Alice Brackenbury
Hello all,
I am hoping very much to find a record of a marriage that took place in (we believe) February of 1903.
There is a James William Firman as showing married in the first quarter of 1903 in Nottingham, in "Vol 7"
Groom's name was James William Firman (born 20/21.JAN.1879 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire)
Bride's name was Alice Brackenbury (born 13.OCT.1875 in Horbling, Lincolnshire).
Also would love to confirm a birth of an Alice May Firman/Brackenbury, born 29.OCT.1904, most likely in Nottingham) She was the daughter of Alice, but we suspect not the daughter of James.
ANY help or direction would be most appreciated!!!!

The scans of the GRO Index are free to view on Ancestry.
There is an Alice May Brackenbury born Dec Q 1904 in St Georges, Hanover Square (London)

Thanks Paul,
Unfortunately, that's not her. The birth date and place are definately known - in Horbling, the Brackenbury family owned and opperated the Plough Inn, which still stands today.

I wouldn't be so quick to write that one off if I were you. You can only "definitely know" that her birthplace was Notts when you've located a birth certificate or some other proof. Ancestors had a habit of not being born, marrying or dying in the right place.

There is an Alice May Brackenbury born Dec Q 1904 in St Georges, Hanover Square (London)
I should have said that her birth was registered in London

True - I agree and have found many "discrepancies" over the course of my research, but this one here is also backed up by census records here in the US as well as immigration records. I'm pretty confident that the birthdate is correct.
Would anyone know the name (and possibly the e-mail address) of the local Anglican/Episcopal church in Nottingham? Or perhaps I'd have better luck with the deanery?
I have just come across another US census record which seems to confirm a 1903 marriage.
Thanks again!

PaulI was referring to Alice May - the daughter.
She is the only Alice Brackenbury registered in the December Quarter of 1904, there are no Alice Firmans.
December Quarter means the months October-November-December, the Index doesn't record the exact date of birth.
She could have been born in Nottingham and the birth registered in London, I think the time limit for registering a birth was 41 days.

Kavik,
This is Alice May's birth reference
Births Dec 1904
Brackenbury Alice May
St Geo H Sq 1a 424
The birth certificate will show her place of birth and mother's name and place of birth, and possibly the father, although if she wasn't married that's unlikely.
The only way is to order the certificate, unfortunately, from
http://www.gro.gov.uk
This is the marriage you found in 1903
Marriages Mar 1903
Firman James William
Pole Alice Elizabeth
Truman Thomas Valentine
Woodhouse Gertrude Sarah
Nottingham 7b 450
ie J W Firman married either Alice Pole or Gertrude Woodhouse
There is no Alice Brackenbury married in that quarter

The marriage which Janet found ...
Mar 1872
Brackenbury Hubert
Short Dorothy Sophia
Marylebone 1a 751
This would tie in with the birth of eldest son Richard
There seems to be a connection here, Marylebone and St Georges Hanover Square being about half a mile apart .... So Alice could have been in London at the time of her giving birth to Alice May in October 1904 ?
Have you found any thing further ?

Hi Paul,
Thanks VERY much for the info!!
No, unfortunately, I have not found anything further - trying to get a few records on this side of the pond, but I'm not sure if they'll tell me anything.
Some of the info on siblings I had, but not the exact birth/Christening dates!
I hadn't realized how close the two locations (Marylebone and St. George's Hanover Sq.) are - very possible!!
Again, thanks for the info - looks like I'll have to order a birth certificate or two to clear up the mystery!
