The Roman's did it, I have a vague recollection of it having occurred in Egypt as well.

Not a 100% sure but I think it comes under
otolaryngology-head and neck surgery

Otolaryngology is actually ears and throat.
Craniofacial is head and face.
May even come under neurology.

I have absolutely no medical knowledge at all but if you copy and paste
otolaryngology-head and neck surgery
into Google, there are nearly 50,000 hits for the UK and over a million worldwide.
It seems to cover ear, nose, throat, head and neck surgery.
