If the bride had been married before, would both her maiden name and her previous married name be on the certificate ?

hello

i have had certificates before where the bride had been married twice before and all three names, maiden and two married were listed, but then i have also had a birth certificate where i know the mother was married before but it only had her maiden name on there, not her other married name. i think it all depends on the info given by the person at the time of marriage. after all, no-one could really check up as there were no computers, and if they weren't from that parish, no-one would know if they were married before or not.

It happens, but is not normal - however - her father's name should be recorded which will of course be her maiden name.

..... - however - her father's name should be recorded which will of course be her maiden name. In most cases, yes. But I am currently transcribing a marriage register and in 500 entries, spanning a period of just over six years, there are nine instances where spinster brides and their fathers do not have the same surname.

I've seen brides stating their own adoptive surname and name of birth father and conversely, their own birth name and name of step father.

There's no simple rule. You have to get the certificate and assess it on its merits.

Thanks folks for your advice and opinions.

In other words there is no definitive answer, just proceed with caution.

When looking for a certain marriage I had the names of both groom and bride or so I thought. I was I admit looking in the wrong place for their marriage as they were living in Headington Oxfordshire 1851 and they were married a few years before. On the childrens birth certificate they had her maiden name. So when I did find a marriage for a groom of the same name in Winchester I decided to go for it. She was a Churcher and not Blake right first name and right father James Blake. It turns out she was born 2 months before her parents married, in turn her mother also was born 2 months before her parents marriage at least they used their right names.

Another I have found was my g grandfathers sister was a widow and she married again using her maiden name now that I think is unusual.
