Any ideas on the occupation given for Ada HARWOOD <1883> appreciated.
1901 census RG13/56 f21 pg34
Looks like Incondecent or Meondecert Worker to me with Kitten? written above & it has got me stumped.

Sally
Hi Sally,
It looks like 'Incondecut worker' and the word above says Fitter.

Hi Sally,
At first I thought it was an I with the tick across it. However, if you look at the dustman a few lines above, he comes from Middlesex and the M looks very similar.
I then looked in the dictionary for similar words and there is a Mendicant Worker. They beg for alms for charity.

Mutley
Hi Mutley,
I believe you are correct in saying a Mendicant is a beggar but I also believe a Mendicant is a religious man, a member of a Monastry or Friary? I am not sure if this would apply to this 18 year girl.

Hello Jeremy,
Yes A Mendicant is a friar, and I agree with you regarding a young girl. I just wondered if the word 'worker' was that she was a follower of the order. Even tried to see if the word above 'Kitten?/?Fitter' could be made into something that would apply (Friar Worker) but no not really!
I wonder if there was an order of sorts in the Fulham area. Maybe Sally will know.
Regards Mutley.
Hi Ann, Sally & Mutley,
Following on from Ann's idea I found this:-
Lewis Howard Latimer 1848-1928 was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts and is considered one of the major African-American inventors of the 20th century. He greatly improved Edison's light bulb and wrote a book in 1890 entitled 'Incandescent Electric Lighting' and started up a factory in London for the production of light bulbs.

I think it is Incandesant works only I can't spell it the same as the enumerator. I tried googling Fulham Lighting company and it is a company in Hong Kong so perhaps it used to be a manufacturer of light bulbs in Fulham but now it makes them in China.
Ann
Hi Ann,
I am not able to read your mind Ann so don't panic, I replied to your thread but somehow it has got above it. Hope Rod doesn't think I'm one of those people meddling with his site!!!
Cheers Jeremy.

To me it looks as if the word above in paler print says 'fittings' and could go with the above occupation of 'stoker' - maybe her brother worked as a fittings stoker? Or she worked as some sort of fittings worker?

Now I am even more confused.
I thought the occupation above was SLATER as in roofing tiles.

You're right - it DOES look more like Slater! So the 'fittings' has to go with Ada... so, some sort of fittings worker...

Many thanks to Jeremy, Mutley & Debbie for the use of your eyes & your suggestions. Ann though gets the gold star as looking at the image again & if I change the 'o' to an 'a' then I would read it as Incandecent.
Thanks also Jeremy for the bit about Lewis Howard Latimer which I will try to follow up to see how far the factory was from Ada's home.
Regards
Sally
