I can't seem to find any on google.

Hi Deirdre,

I've been away, but have looked around a bit.

As far as newspaper archives go, there are some but they tend to either be old (pre-1900) or fairly recent (1980ish and forward). A membership to www.newenglandancestors.org would provide access to a US newspaper archive, but it only goes up to 1892. There is a subscription service to all newspapers that have been archived, but the site doesn't inform us as to which newspapers are available nor how far back they go, so I've not yet subscribed.

For something that is a very local publication, with very localized interest, it would generally be the domain of the municipality to collect those records. The city or town (and/or a local historical society) would generally keep newspapers of record for said town or city. Most often those newspaper copies would be available at a local library.

Generally speaking, vital records such as birth, death, and marriage records are the responsibility of individual states. Prior to the late 1800s, those records were kept by local municipalities only. Each state has their own policy about how records are kept and released, with some states being more liberal with that information than others.

I looked online for associations to the USS Tunny and the USS Monrovia. Those groups exist and sometimes they list members who are actively involved in those reunion groups, but I could not find a fit with your relatives.

I don't know a great deal about the workings of the Freemasons, but a look online revealed that you can get genealogical information from the local lodge where your relative enrolled. I don't know how much information they keep on their deceased members, and the details you require may not be available through their records, but it may be worth the effort to contact them.

The ideal situation would be to find someone near Portland who could look do the research. You might try here: http://www.raogk.org/listing.htm. Click on "Oregon" and see if there is someone who might be able to assist you. I see there is a person who will look up marriage records, which may be of help to you in locating your missing female ancestor.

They do not charge a fee for the research, but they do ask that you reimburse the researcher for any expenses they might incur (copying fees and/or fuel allowances if they have to drive around to get the information).

Oregon is about 3000 miles from me, so I'm afraid that I cannot be of much assistance in tracking down those records.

Keep us posted on how things are going.

Best wishes,

Deb

Hi Deb

Thanks for that help. My sister-in-law has her husbands sister over from Seattle and we are visiting on Tuesday. I was going to ask her if she gets to Portland what is the actual distance would I be asking too much of her in seeing if she could go and do a look up for me?

I was browsing a link from the link above ... they advise to lookup the Oregon death index first before asking for a lookup from a volunteer (free online 1903 - 1930)

http://www.heritagetrailpress.com/Death_Index/

and I did not see a 1913 death for your George recorded (use only G else it will not pick up Geo). 1923? bad writing in that family Bible?

Nope ChristineR, June 1913 backed up with a letter from Nellie to Annie, guess the registration was late. Where did you find the death in freebdm or Ancestry?

Hi ChristineR, Got in now I know where you looked for death record. He isn't there the City_of_Portland didn't match up and he lived and died Multnomah, Portland, Oregon. I might get onto the Freemasons in Oregon and see if someone at Portland lodge 55 can get me a photo of the grave site with inscription. I have missed my chance with Rita as she was called up to the North Coast to a friend who has just arrived back from holidays and want's to see her before she goes.

Mum has found a newspaper clipping of George's Obituary |banghead|

I would still like to get one on one of his daughters

Hunt Grace Marjorie
County: Portland
Death Date 08 Jan 1926
Certificate: 69

This may have living relatives listed on it as George Hunt's went more into his Freemason and navy career.

Deirdre Thank you both very much |hug|

Now where exactly do I go from here.???

Deb, Thank you for getting that info from Ancestry for me.

I dont know his middle name - I only looked on the Oregon death index. I do not have a sub to Ancestry. One would assume he would be in the Oregon death index. Perhaps he died somewhere else? and is just buried there. Bit hard to avoid a death registration!

The links work ok for me :D

Link worked fine when I typed it into the address but non of them look like him
Christine. True I can't remember all of what mum read out to me on phone but I think he was sick for a while before he died.

Oh, yes, MUM found a newspaper clipping with his obit but it only went into his Freemason and navy career no living relatives.

Been thinking about that dieing elsewhere I think it would still be Oregon and Portland if he was in a hospital......so don't know where his death is registered but he is a very hard man to find records for the census and a marriage to Annie Bradford are all I have found online. He was born before 1937 and the marriage was found by finding Annie as they were married in Middlesex. I presume her home ground but I can't find a birth for her either.

This follows over into his children as the eldest Jessie was the only one to marry and have children Grace never did she had an accident as a baby and was as they now say intelectually handicapped I believe and Bertha married twice 1) Stump 2) Packman and I think she lived in Calafornia. I cannot find a marriage or death for either of them just Bertha in census 1930 divorced and under the second marrage name Packman. Jessie had to have been married after 1895 because Mum has a hankie that she sent to Annie (George and Annie nee Bradford's Daughter) from the Portland Fair 1895 with Jessie Hunt painted on it. So you see why I am following the obituary line of enquiry. This family just didn't record things, if they did they hid them.

Thanks for listening

You may already know this, but here goes:

1920 Census: City of Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. Taken 7-Jan-1920.

Hunt, Nellie: Head of Household, Age 59, Widowed, Not employed.
Birthplace: Ohio,
Father's Birthplace: Massachusetts
Mother's Birthplace: Maine

Hunt, Grace: Daughter, Age 28, Single, Not Employed.
Birthplace: England,
According to the census, she can read and write.

Stump, Bertha: Daughter, Age 26, Married, Not Employed.
Birthplace: England

I found a Bertha Packman in Portland, Oregon in 1930. She lives by herself, is a bookbinder in a printing shop, and is a 42-year-old divorcee. But how can she be 26 in 1920 and 42 in 1930? Perhaps a mistake.

Anyhow, you can order a death record from http://www.vitalchek.com/agency_locator.asp?providerid=5857

OR

Hi Deb

The Packman in 1930 was given to me about 4 months ago and I haven't been able to find anything under that name since so looking at the full info obviously this is not my Bertha anyway I am sure when she remarried that she lived in California LA I think. MUM's vague memory of Bertha writing to my grandmother is California LA.

Thanks for the above. Now I have Grace's death reference number I will see what I can get there, Still wish I could get an obituary that lists living family but that would be to easy wouldn't it...lol.

Thank you both for all your help I really appreciate it.

Yeah, but they might not be living now would they! And if you do get a list of names and locations - it is 80 years old! You just need to sit back and wait for a cousin from the line to contact you - but you can help by posting info of common ancestors on US based boards. You do not need to go into too many personal details - just enough to make cousins want to contact you.

Hi ChristineR

I've just been going over the maths with what Deb found me re census 1920 That is definately the right family but they can't add Nellie was born 1850 in 1920 she would be 70 not 59 the girls likewise 28 should be 42 and 26 should be 35 weird. If these ages are wrong the Packman could be right.

With the obit live rellies I thought they might give the married surname of Jessie. Then that gives me a census search for her. Brain Pain.

Deirdre

|banghead| Just went back on old paperwork in 1910 census the ages are the same as in the 1920 census and as this is the first one Nellie filled out looks like she copied from the last one if that is possible but the ages are the same.

I have googled my eyes out of my head all afternoon and I think I may have found Jessie A Hunt marriage no verification of course but in Genealogical Forum of Oregon there is a listing of marriages and working on the hankie from the Portland Fair saying Jessie Hunt in 1895 I used that as my starting date and came up with JESSIE A HUNT marrying CHAS W GARROTTSON can either of you check the census in 1920 and 1930 under that name, please, also is it possible to find out if the parents names are right for this marriage. I would appreciate it truely I would.
