I found my GGGrandfather and his 11 children in Canada moving from Ontario to Manitoba in census & other records. Fortunately the 1901 Manitoba census is partially online and I have just discovered his birth date and emigration date. Now how do I find him in England? Census didn't require location in England. Cannot find him in shipping records as Canada did not require passenger names in 1830. Haven't found certificates to date.
Anecdotal: "During WW2 leave my father visited his Theobald-Medcalf grandmother in Sudbury Suffolk. He said there was a pub around the corner from her place that was owned/run by his ROWE relatives." Of course they could have come from anywhere.
Robert James ROWE born January 11, 1820 or 1821 in England. He emigrated in 1830. (approx 10 years old). I am looking for his parents or any ancestry.
How do I begin the search in British records?? Any suggestions??

I'm afraid I have very little knowledge of Canadian records so the following thoughts may not be possible/relevant.....
What is the earliest census available in Canada? - I have an vague recollection that they date back to 1851 and that there was one earlier 1835-ish???) Do any of these show Robert Rowe with his parents and his dad's age and occupation? Did his father live with Robert or any other of his children in his old age? Census returns should be your first place of enquiry, if you haven't already looked at them.
When and where did Robert Rowe marry - I have another recollection that Ontario registration began around 1869-ish. If so and there is no marriage certificate, are there any church records available or failing that was there a newspaper report of the marriage? If you can find Robert's father's name from a census, try hunting for a death certificate for him - does this give his age at death?
If Robert Rowe's dad was an army pensioner, given land at the end of his service, then there may possibly be a way forward. Other than that, for a frequently occurring name such as Rowe, it can be a bit of a pin-in-the-haystack situation. I think you may have to do some more work in Canada before you can look at searching for him in the UK

Thanks again Geoffers,
Yes I have Robert Rowe in 1871 & 1881 & 1901 census but not the 1861. Have records of his land registries in Perth Cnty. ON and MB. Haven't been able to find 2 marriage certificates 1845 and 1862 although that search continues. I have been searching church records for early marriages for a couple of years. The father or mother didn't live with family in the census.
I think the family must have lived elsewhere before 1845 and am searching that tack. Haven't exhausted all avenues, thought I'd try the source.
It really was a shot in the dark... the hunt continues.
