Anyone know how to access information about the Essex Regiment WWI? My G Uncle William Medcalf one of the lucky ones from Sudbury Suffolk. I have very little on him except a photo in uniform so would like to add some military history of his service or Essex Regiment.

Hi Kate

Do you have his Medal card? It will at least give you a direction to look in. Can get it here documents online for £3.50 if you havent already. Id say he's the 2nd on the list of 13, BUT worth cross referencing with 1901 census records to check. If you identify him, you can always get access to the Batallions War Diaries to ID what actions he was likely to have been involved in & thereby paint a picture of him (so to speak). If you really struggle, mail me & Ill see what I can dig out if u like?

Theres also loads of Essex Regmnt info on another site but I dont imagine its polite to mention it here - especially as im a new member ... !

Better late than never .... 2nd on list must be my Wm. Medcalf. Middle name Nathan, and also on 1901 Census. Many thanks.
