I need some help with a place name
I have a copy of the entry of my G G G Gfathers marriage from the Prilaux Library in Guernsey. The entry reads:-
"George Taylor, Son of George, of MINTON in the County of Dorset and Sarah Green daughter of William of STRATTON in the said County, were married together by banns on the 17th September 1845".
I have found the person I believe to be Sarah Green as the daughter of William Green and Sarah Peech of Stratton with Grimstone but I am unable to find a MINTON and wonder if this was colloqualism for Minterne Magna or Minterne Parva around that time?
Any enlightenment would be most welcome
Many thanks

It could well have been, but it could also be a mistranscription for HINTON - Hinton Parva, Hinton Martell and Hinton St Mary.
Have you tried looking for George's father in the 1841 census? It should show which village he was in to help narrow it down for you.

Many thanks for that Tracy. I'll do some further research with these Hintons.
George Taylor is a rather common name and the George I have details of was in Guernsey in 1841, so finding his father is a bit more tricky.
Your suggestions are very much appreciated

Hi,
There is a place on the Dorset/Hampshire borders today called 'New Milton' ....... any possibility it could be Milton?

New Milton is in Hampshire and always has been - unlike certain areas which have changed county since the boundary changes in the 1970's - so I doubt it would be referring to this one, but it may be worth bearing in mind if all other options are exhausted ;-)

Good thinking Chloed, thanks for your reply.
Geo. Taylor senior is recorded as a butcher.
Thanks once again
research continues along another avenue with renewed vigour

minterne magna baptisms are on ffhs site , i have got credit on there , dont mind looking but need a rough year, as there are quite a few candidates, cant find george the butcher on 1841.

I couldn't find Geo snr as a butcher on Dorset OPC either.
George Taylor the junior was born 1817. Although his marriage record says "of Minton in the County of Dorset" I cannot confirm that he was born there but, I assume this was the last place he lived before going to Guernsey.
I have no knowledge that George senior remained in Minton but he wasn't in Guernsey in 1841.
Thanks for your help I appreciate it.

no george on ffhs 1815-1820, but they have 2 places on index mintern magna, and another one with E on the end of mintern. one of them stops at 1812, so he still could have been born there.
