i have a copy of the 1871 census for my relatives and i can see that it states the head of the household as a widow with no occupation listed. Her eldest son is 16 and also has no occupation listed and the rest of the children al under 11 classed as scholars, however there is a lodger listed living with them and his occupation seems to read private gentleman thats if i have read it correct.
Would they have been living off the income from the lodger ?. On the census return they are living at a farm so i dont know why she wasnt listed as a farmer ?, can anyone shed any light on it especially the occupation of the lodger.the reference for the cenusu return is RG10/2838 Brampton Farm Wolstanton Staffs , head of the household Jemima Ratcliff .
Thanks
