Samuel PITTS, son of Joseph and Maria, was baptised in Crediton parish
church on 26 April 1807. He married Mary Ann PRATT in Cullompton parish
church on 31 December 1828. Mary Ann, daughter of Edward PRATT, was born in
Cullompton on 5 April 1805.
In 1851 Samuel, a cordwainer, and Mary Ann were living in James St, St Mary
Major, Exeter, with their children Maria, Eliza, Samuel Edward, Mary Ann,
Joseph and Temperance.
Can anyone help me, please, with a look-up for the family in the 1861
census?

Hi Adrian
Had a quick look in St Mary Major but couldn't see this family at all, and also had a look at Cullompton but no joy there. Will try and have a look through the rest of Exeter just to see if they were elsewhere in the city, also Crediton in case they went back there.
Do you know where the family was in 1871, or even 1881?? That might give an indication of which direction they were moving in!

Try Cheriton Bishop--I know there was a Pitts family there in the 1910-20s

Being a resident of Exeter I can only shed light on some local 'Pitts'
Pitts used to be tenants of Honeyford Farm Cheriton Bishop and a highly possible cause to an early death may have been due to the fact he travelled to Exeter in the rain to pay his rent on time to landowners Arden of Southams Farm Middlemoor.Pitt is buried in Cheriton Bishop Churchyard and has a prominent visible Headstone.
Another local Pitts was a papermaker at Trews Weir on the River Exe at Exeter, now a housing estate.
Another Pitts ,also a papermaker, owned Head weir paper mill, now a drinking house called "The Mill on The Exe".
A recent scan of Marriages in Parish records,St Edmunds on the Bridge,if I remember correctly, listed one or two Pitts around 1840-60.At the time I was researching other surnames.
