My grandfather's mother died when he was 4 and his father died when he was still a child, and my grandfather, himself, died in the 1970's. So, never being able to meet him, his side of the family has always been a mystery. Based on some information that my Grandfather's brother's widow sent me, I was able to track down a marriage certificate for my grandfather's parents. They were married in July 1911. Their first child was born in October 1911. Motivation for a marriage, perhaps?

I'm so pleased that I could find something concrete about my grandfather's family, like a marriage certificate, of his parentage. I'm going to send it to my grandmother, who is always interested in these things.

I would really be interested in finding out why/how his mother and father died. If his mother died about 1917, is there a way for me to get her death certificate?

You can check through the GRO indexes for the death registration, there are several on-line indexes:
ancestry have a free search

1837online is a pay-per-view

If you post the details you have someone may be willing to have a look for you

Thank you.

I think I may have found the index for Catherine Johnson (née Mooney) of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. I know she died on 24 April 1919, and the free ancestry index indicates her numbers as 10 b 180. So, I'm going to order the certificate. Thanks!

As for Willliam Johnson, I know he died 5 April 1927, presumably in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne as well. He was 39 years old, but died exactly two weeks before his 40th birthday. There are two William Johnson's indexed from New Castle-Upon-Tyne, one died at age "38" and the other at age "39." So, I'll go with the 39-year-old and hope that's the right one. (10 b 183).
