Prior to 1837 and the introduction of civil rgistration, the main way of tracing the skeleton of a family history is through parish registers.

These are usually available in County Record Offices - if you cannot get to to the one you need, then they often either sell copies on fiches or photocopies of entries. Family History Societies sometimes produce transcripts of registers and none of these are feasible, then the mormon church (LDS) has record centres where you can hire copies of registers on microfilm.

I would also suggest trying the 1841 census for Little Neston and surrounding parishes, to see exactly how common the surname ABEL was locally, and also to see if you can pick up any households containing a Hugh ABEL.

The 1841 census contains less detail that later census returns, just name, age (for those over 15 this is usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years), occupation, whether born in county, and some disabilities are noted. But, if you can find a housegold with Hugh ABEL in it, this may well include his parent(s) and sibling(s) and give you a rough idea of ages and so you can narrow down when to look for a marriage of parents.

You might then also try the 1851 census to again see whether many of the ABEL family were still in the area. The advantage of this census is that 'exact' ages are recorded (well they're susually roughly correct) and also places of birth. If you can find some ABELs born in the late 18th century you may be able to pick out whether the family had moved to Litle Neston from another parish.

There are a number of Abels listed on www.cheshirebmd.org.uk . It includes a Hugh Abel married to Catharine Roylance 1856-1860 at St Michael, Ashton under Lyne and a Hugh Abel married to Sarah Nixon 1861-1865 at St Elphin, Warrington.
There used to be coal mines at Neston, Ashton under Lyne, Warrington & St Helens. All long gone now.

Thank you to all who have replied. I am sure now that this is indeed the family I want. However, I would love to know more of Hugh's ancestry. If anyone could point me in the right direction to find his parents, or even further back, I would be delighted,
Thanks, cymraes38

Hi,

I am also researching the Abel Family from Neston, mine is Hugh Abel born 1842 Liverpool, Father Hugh Abel Shoemaker born Gt Neston 1799, Mother Sarah also born Neston.

Hugh Abel married Sarah Nixon at Warrington 1865, they then settled in Garston Liverpool.

I think your Hugh and mine must be related as the name Hugh goes right through the Family.

Regards Bonnie.
