Hi to everyone, Long time since I have had time to post any messages. I have a query on a birth cert that I have. It is the birth cert of my GG Grandfather, I noticed that where it says when and where born it has the date of 29th Dec 1849, nothing odd about that I hear you say. But where it says "when registered" it has the date of 31st Dec 1849. My question is surely you would'nt be able to register a birth on New years eve or would you ? Many thanks for taking the time to read this. Lizz in not so sunny New Zealand.

No idea what the situation is for registry offices, but in the UK, New Years Eve is not a holiday. Many places shut early, but 31st December is a "normal" working day.

I don't believe even New Years Day would have been a holiday in England in 1849!

Thanks for those replies. We learn something new everyday. I just thought it was always a holiday. Lizz.

New Years Day became a holiday in England in 1974.
