View Full Version : Dearth of researchers

Some little time ago Rod commented that there seemed to be very few researchers in Derbyshire who posted on the Forum. I have just returned from communing with the sea for the last time this year, and after being away for ten days there were fifteen pages of posts to work through. There was just one from Derbyshire and only two from Nottinghamshire - Rod was right. About 85% of my forbears are from these two counties; somebody, somewhere, should be researching at least some of the names

A friend and I had a very restful and soothing break, but with a rather dodgy ending - she had a stroke in the car as i was driving home. Thankfully, very minor, and she is making good progress in hospital but it was a nasty experience for both of us.

Eileen, I agree with you. I have been, for the last 25 years, researching in both Notts. and Derbys. my family name of Richards, though I have to say for the last few years, I have researched the small north east Derbyshire village of Palterton.

I post very few messages, though I am tempted to ask for a death look up.

Anyone interested in a glimpse of some of my research can look at my web site (now then Myth, no comment!) (vbg)

Most likely we both scan the forum each day for any interest in both counties as no doubt other members scan for their counties.

Meanwhile, I hope your friend is feeling much better.

Regards Jack

Jack - we have had previous contacts and I do look regularly at your web site. Brett tried very hard to conduct a Derbyshire chat eveining but it failed through lack of interest, (or just plain lethargy on the part of Derbyshire folk). It may just be that the people in these 'ere parts are way before cenus and General Registration in their research (as are you and I) and so feel that there is little point in posting. Perhaps it is believed that there is some truth in the old adage - "strong i' th'arm - weak i' th'ead" Who knows, ?

Hi Eileen,
I too hope that your friend is beginning to feel better, what an unfortunate end to a nice break away.

About the lack of Derbyshire postings - perhaps with the amount of material that Jayne, Brett, Jack and myself offer for the county, we cover most of the queries!
Although it would be nice to see the occasional posting, even if it is only to say hello ;)

True, Patrisia, true, and I would add the Wirksworth site and the ongoing 'Yesterday's Journeys. I know about Jack and Jayne and Brett - obviously - but do you have your own website and may I know the address if you do ? Most of my lines are in North Derbyshire, the bit between Sheffield and Chesterfield and as far south from there as Shirland and as far west as Hope and Baslow.

Derbyshire researchers can't all be shy as I get lots of contacts from GenesR.

Yes of course, apologies to John Palmer & Mike Spencer; where would we be without them!
A full list of Derbyshire OPS sites can be found on the Wirksworth site

My Smalley One Place Study is on http://www.smalley-ops.dsl.pipex.com/smalleyops.html and although I concentrate on Smalley, there are people from the surrounding villages, such as Morley; Horsley & Horsley Woodhouse; Denby, Shipley; West Hallam; Mapperley; Ripley, and Stanley, to name but a few.

Not far enough north for you, I'm afraid.

Don't forget about me..|jumphappy

I am here but with my folks never venturing out of Clay Cross, therefore all my family research is around there.
Nice to see Mike Spencer's sites mentioned, bearing in mind that I am the person who maintains them :)
Also I am the webmaster for Chesterfield & District FHS so I have a few records for the area.
So with doing look ups and Mike's and my sites, I don't think I have done any research of my own for at least 2 years.

All the best, fellow Derbyshire researchers, hope some of you are able to make it to the 'Derbysgen Get Together' this Saturday.
Regards
Neil

Sorry to butt in, My research is also Notts/Derbys I live in Chesterfield and am full of admiration for the likes of Mike Spencer who I met the other week at Matlock and thanked him personally for a bit of very welcome info he had uncovered, Re postings, I run another family history group and it's the devil of a job to get people motivated so It's not just this forum, my impression is that once people have got the info they want the rest can go to ..... this of course is a very selfish attitude all to common these days

Thank you, David, for introducing me to two new sites for DBY/NTT which I shall peruse with interest. Does the name MOSSBROOK have any special significance ?

Yes, I met and courted my wife in the Moss Valley near Eckington and we had a business called Mossbrook

A live a stone's throw away from the Moss Brook, both the pub and the wateray. Were you the compter business in Mosborough village ? Are your distant roots in Eckington and what other Family History group do you run ?

Our business was in Chesterfield, we did sell a few computers but at the time amiga 500s were all the rage.
My wife was born in Ridgeway and I lived in Gleadless, but a long time ago.

Anybody whose research deals with families in Derbyshire, who rarely if ever left the area, are eventually connected to just about every other family in the district. Two of my lines are connected to the Bowler line by marriages....not close connections but the more you research the more distant the connections.
May I also suggest that you not make such sweeping statements about researchers.....your assumption that all Derbyshire researchers are selfish is offensive.

Dear June,
I was'nt just reffering to Derbyshire researchers but people in general, I have answered queries on numerous occasions and have had no thanks or feedback, I have also answered queries and have broken brick walls down, for which some people have been truly grateful, so there you are, My attitude is that we are all in the same boat stuggling to find things and any help, no matter where from should be appreciated
