I am interested to gather information relating to the family of BAUGH in Gloucestershire. in particular the parents of Rowland Baugh of the Stonehouse Aldon.

Rowland was born abt 1657, he married Mary Folliott at Onibury Sept 23 1692, was succeeded by his son Thomas Baugh and grandson Thomas Folliott Baugh all of the StoneHouse Aldon.

Mary Folliott was daughter of Thomas 2nd Lord Folliott of Ballyshannon and was descendant from the Folliotts of Worcestershire.

Rowland Baugh is described as Armiger in the parish register of Stokesay.
The Baugh's of Gloucestershire are recorded in Heraldic visitations.
I am taking a guess at a connection.

If anyone can suggest any possible line of enquiry to seek record of the birth of this Rowland around 1657, I would be most pleased to hear ..

You may get a lead on these families in the first instance by consulting the Victoria County History for Gloucestershire and Worcestershire at the appropriate county record office, as these will contain basic information on local notable families. With luck you may also find a knowledgeable senior archivist who might throw a little more light on the matter.

Have you accessed the Access to Archives (A2A) website to establish what documentary material may exist relating to the families you refer to?

I have found the following:

1. Rowland Baugh, bapt. 25 Sept. 1668, Ludlow Shropshire.
Father: William Baugh, Mother: Isabell, Spouse: Mary.

2. Rolandus Baugh, bapt. 18 May 1677, Acton Scott, Shropshire.
father: Richardi Baugh, Mother: Elizabetha.

Despite the somewhat later date than the one you suggest, the first of these seems to be the individual to whom you refer. There may well have been a period of some years between his birth and his baptism.

The second is probably a close relative (cousin?), given that names often repeat in different branches/generations of the same family over this period, especially in the case of middle class families, as the Baughs seem to be.

There are several references to Ro(w)land Baugh in 'Access to Archives' (A2A) which concern various legal transactions entered into by him.

When I saw your posting under Gloucestershire I did not immediately connect it with Shropshire and subsequently found your other posting, so apologies if I have duplicated information you already have.

Regards

Geoff

Thanks for the resopnse, sorry have taken a little time to respond.
We see the connections between the above families in various records dating back from Rowland Baugh and Mary Follott marriage in 1692.
With a little luck and your input I will now extend my search in the direction suggested.
It is a little difficult being so far from the source.
We have a reasonable reference library here in Sydney containing many records of Early England, but I have limited knowledge as to where to best begin to look.
thank you again for your direction.
