Hi

I am new to the forum.

My family name is POTTER who mostly lived around the King’s Norton area in South Birmingham. I am having some difficulty tracing my great grandfather’s wife. My father left a journal that stated that his grandfather, Daniel POTTER, worked for a gunsmith and was very strong. My father believed that Daniel was been born around 1850. There are 3 or 4 possible candidates but none had a spouse named Rose SALINA. No-one can find any record of her which may be that she was not born in the UK – possibly Italy or Spain? Does anyone have a SALINA in their family history?

It could be that you need to take a step back.

Who were Daniel's children? When and where were they born? Do you have their birth certificates? Is that where you got the mother's name from?
Have you found the family in any censuses?

Well, I just had a look for a Daniel Potter born circa 1840-1860 married to a Rose/Rose S/Rose Salina/Rose Selina and came up with zilch on the CR at ancestry, and the free BMD. Sorry :(

Like Peter says, I would take a step down a generation (perhaps if you could give us the names of the next generation down we could pinpoint them on the census?)

As for the name Salina/Selina - its around. As far as I know its English.

Indeed. That was the first thought that occurred to me - that her forenames were Rosa Selina but the poster seems adamant that SALINA was the surname.

FreeBMD has just three entries for the surname SALINA - two of them apparently relating to the same person.

Selina is a Greek word for Moon.

errr...well...come to that, SALINA is the Spanish word for 'salt flat' or 'salt works'.

OK then, the Greek goddess of the Moon was called Selene. Perhaps babes born when the moon was full were sometimes called Selina cf. Noels born near Christmas.

There is a Rose Salina living in Malaysia. She has a fotopage.

I think we must await further enlightenment from the questioner.

After taking another look at my father's journal, I am convinced that 'Rose SALINA' is simply a corruption on 'Rosalina' and maybe a pet name that a 8 or 9 yo boy had for his grandmother. I have since traced the spouse of my grandfather (with some help from Ann65). Thanks for your interest.
