I have just started my family tree and dont really have that much information about my grandparents other then their names, births, deaths and marriage year. I have found my grandad but for the life of me I cant find my nana Agnes. Could some one point me in the right direction?

Agnes Jane B Anderson, born 7th March 1913 (according to my living relatives) but on the England and Wales death index they have her birth as 7th March 1915.

She married John Vincent Douglass on the 15th December 1934.

Hi
Welcome to the forum. :)
First step is to get copies of your grandparents' marriage certificate (which will give their fathers' names & occupations) & also their birth certificates. The GRO (General Register Office for England & Wales) references are:
Birth of Agnes J. Anderson (mother's maiden name Blake), March quarter 1915, Newcastle T. Registration district., volume 10b page 356.
Marriage of John V. Douglass December Q 1934, Newcastle T., vol 10b page 261.

You can get copies of the certificates by ordering online through the government website www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate)

Thanks for your help.

How did you come up with the name blake?

I know it's probably a stupid question but in my defence i am new to this.

Not stupid at all!

After 1911 the GRO birth index includes the mother's maiden name. You can view the partial index on www.freebmd.org.uk (http://www.freebmd.org.uk) (but it is not complete yet & has few records after 1915), or the complete index at records offices, major libraries or at sites such as ancestry (you need to register personal details, but you do not need to pay to view this index).

I'm using that freeBMD but it keeps saying no match. I feel like I'm banging my head on a brick wall. She should be registered shouldnt she?

She is registered, but freebmd is not complete yet. It is compiled by volunteers. You need to look at the complete GRO index.

Hi Wirral

I'm stunned you quoted below that my nanas (Agnes J Anderson) maiden name was Blake. My uncle told me yesterday that her maiden name was in fact Blake

The GRO (General Register Office for England & Wales) references are:
Birth of Agnes J. Anderson (mother's maiden name Blake), March quarter 1915, Newcastle T. Registration district., volume 10b page 356.

How did you know this, obviously you have been doing this for some time now, is there any tips you can give me regarding starting to search?

First step is to get the birth certificate via the GRO (see earlier message). By the way Newcastle T. could be Newcastle upon Tyne or Newcastle upon Trent, probably the former. Look at www.genuki.org.uk (http://www.genuki.org.uk/) a very useful site with thousands of links.
I'd order the cert straightaway as a new series of "Who do you think you are?" has just started & last time the delivery time went from 1 week to 3+ weeks.
The birth cert will give the parents' names, then you look through the GRO index for the marriage & get that cert, & so on until you reach 1837 when civil registration began. You can also start using the censuses once you get back to 1901. They are very useful, but less reliable than the certs so you still need to get them.
Also look at church records, trade directories, wills.
That should keep you going for a while. :)
