Can anyone tell me where is the best place to find information about who ran/owned pulic houses in the 1850s-1900s. I have a few ancestors who are listed as being publicans in the Grimsby area. I know at least one of the pubs is still there, but am unsure where to look next to find out more information about them.Any help would be great. thank you

I don't know the `best' place to look but there are recollections of Grimsby including various pubs and the some names of the Licencees here.

County directories and censuses. Licensing records might possibly be your third port of call after you've got an outline of dates, pubs and people from the first sources mentioned.

Did you study the detail on the cencuses? Some of my relatives were listed as publicans or beer house keepers and the cencus actualy says works from home so their home is the pub. I found this out about a relative that only lived 5 minutes down the road to me and I went and saw the house which is not that big but was the pub. In the past I have visited a pub that was part of a building run by english heritage and it was the size of a small front room.|wave|

As a former brewery employee this was going to be my advice :)
